Multanis

Multanis
In the Delhi sultanate, a large part of the long-distance trade was controlled by a community of traders identified by Ziya' Barani as Multanis (i.e., belonging to Multan). Some of them also indulged in usury and commerce. Most of the Multanis were proba-bly Hindus, but a few Muslim names are also recorded, 'Ain ul-Mulk Multani being one of them. The community of Muslim shop-keepers of north India at present identified as Punjabis are believed to be the descendants of Multanis converted to Islam.
